2027 AMG G 63 to see significant power increase to 612 bhp

The high-performance SUV from Mercedes-AMG, the G 63 AMG, is set to receive a new 'AMG M177 EVO V8 biturbo' engine as part of its model year update. This is because the existing M177 V8 engine used in the current G 63 AMG struggles to meet the Euro 7 emissions regulations.

The Euro 7 emissions standards will apply to all newly launched vehicles from 29 November 2026. Existing models already on the market must comply with these regulations from 29 November 2027. In response, Mercedes-Benz will switch to the AMG M177 EVO V8 biturbo engine starting with the G 63 AMG model year update, which is scheduled for production in April 2027.

The newly developed AMG M177 EVO V8 biturbo engine was first introduced in the facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class, unveiled in March 2026. It will then be progressively applied to the large SUV models, the GLE 63 and the three-row large SUV GLS 63, to prepare for the upcoming regulations.

This engine adopts a flat-plane crankshaft design with a 180-degree angle between crank pins. Developed using motorsport technology, this design was first applied to the Mercedes-AMG two-door high-performance coupé, the AMG GT. As a result, the ignition order is more evenly spaced compared to the previous engine, and exhaust gas flow has been optimised.

Furthermore, it combines a Miller cycle operating method with a mild hybrid (MHEV) system to enhance efficiency. The 'Hot V' design, which positions the turbochargers inside the engine bank, is also a key feature of the M177 EVO engine. This design approach is reportedly being adopted by Toyota for its next-generation high-performance V8 engine. Additionally, models equipped with the M177 EVO engine will come with an electronic particulate filter system as standard to reduce emissions.

The benefits of the new engine are not limited to meeting emissions standards. The current M177 engine in the G 63 AMG produces a maximum output of 585 horsepower. In contrast, the M177 EVO engine fitted in the recently announced facelifted GLE 63 AMG and GLS 63 AMG delivers a maximum output of 612 horsepower and a peak torque of 86.67 kgf·m. Therefore, a similar level of performance improvement can be expected for the G 63 AMG model year update set to launch in 2027.
