V12 Engine-Equipped Urus Ancestor... Lamborghini 'LM002' Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Lamborghini (Automobili Lamborghini) is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the LM002, the V12 off-road model that was the first super SUV and paved the way for the Urus family. First unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1986, the LM002 was a declaration that combined the DNA of Sant'Agata Bolognese super sports cars with off-road performance.

The origins of the LM002 can be traced back to experimental projects developed between the late 1970s and early 1980s: the Cheetah and the LM001. Subsequently, engineer Giulio Alfieri provided technical insight. By positioning Lamborghini's V12 engine at the front of the vehicle, balance and control were ensured even on the most challenging terrain. After years of testing in the Saudi Arabian desert, the final LM002 was born.

Produced from 1986 to 1992, the LM002 was a super SUV that combined super sports car performance with off-road capability. Immediately after its debut at the 1986 Brussels Motor Show, it attracted attention for its presence and character.

At the heart of the LM002's status was the powertrain inherited from the Countach Quattrovalvole. The 5,167cc 60-degree V12 engine featured four valves per cylinder and produced approximately 450 horsepower. This allowed the massive Lamborghini off-roader, weighing over 2,700 kg, to reach a top speed of 210 km/h.

A total of 300 units were produced by 1992, rising to 301 if you include the only right-hand drive version, which is now on display at the Lamborghini Museum in Sant'Agata Bolognese. Today, the LM002 is regarded as the pioneer of the modern Lamborghini super SUV concept and the technical and philosophical foundation that would later lead to the birth of the Urus.

Off-Road Luxury

Despite its angular exterior design and massive body, the LM002's interior showcased hand-finished luxury. It featured high-quality leather seats and wood trim, with air conditioning, blue-tinted windows, and a roof-integrated hi-fi audio system available as standard or optional equipment. A TV could even be fitted upon request. The cabin could accommodate four people, and the spacious rear load area emphasised the vehicle's practicality.

Today, the LM002 remains one of the purest expressions of Lamborghini's uncompromising philosophy. It is also regarded as a pioneering model that foresaw the potential of the SUV market decades before it became a global trend.

A Living Legacy: From LM002 to Urus

The LM002 forged a new path that didn't exist at the time, becoming a true pioneer of the modern high-performance luxury SUV. Decades later, in 2012, Lamborghini unveiled the Urus concept, a modern reinterpretation of the LM002's legacy. Its robust and bold SUV design was reminiscent of the LM002, while embodying Lamborghini DNA in a modern and versatile form.

In 2017, the production Lamborghini Urus achieved a top speed of 305 km/h, proving Lamborghini's legitimacy in the segment pioneered by the LM002 decades earlier.

Today, the LM002 is continuously maintained and preserved through Lamborghini's historic heritage preservation department, Lamborghini Polo Storico. It supports LM002 owners worldwide through restoration services, authenticity certification, and the research, restoration, and reproduction of genuine parts.

Meanwhile, Polo Storico, in collaboration with Pirelli, has resumed production of the Scorpion BK tyre, originally developed specifically for the LM002 in the early 1980s. These tyres are now available to customers worldwide through the official Lamborghini dealer network.
