A week ago, fresh spy shots of the updated German SUV were published online, showing quite significant differences from the current model.

The compact crossover X2 was first unveiled in autumn 2017, and in 2020 a facelifted model hit the market. Today, the second-generation SUV is on the production line, which made its debut in autumn 2023. The time is now approaching for a planned update, and test prototypes have already been caught by spy photographers.

The main changes will occur at the front: the coupé-style crossover will receive a completely new 'face' in the current Neue Klasse style, with narrow 'nostrils' for the radiator grille (or its imitation). It is already clear that, as with the platform-sharing X1, the headlights are significantly tapered towards the centre. One can also expect LED daytime running light graphics that differ from the new iX3 and X5. As for the rear, a new inner layout for the tail lights is visible, although they will retain their shape. A slim horizontal LED strip will sit at the top, with a pair of angled quadrilaterals below.

Like the related BMW X1, the coupé-style X2 is built on the front-wheel-drive UKL2 platform, which is also used by the 1 Series hatchbacks and the Mini Countryman. Most likely, the SUV will retain the majority of its current powertrains, which include 1.5- and 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines (the most powerful version, the M35i xDrive, produces 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque). There are also a couple of fully electric variants with outputs of 204 hp (247 Nm) and 313 hp (494 Nm).

The premiere of the updated X2 is expected before the end of this year. Meanwhile, last week we reported on the ownership experience of the BMW M5 F90.
