Toyota Tundra large pickup gets off-road Trailhunter version

A Japanese-branded truck, primarily designed for the American market, has received updates for the 2027 model year.

Toyota began production of its full-size pickup, the Tundra, in 1999, with the US remaining its primary market. The third generation of this truck was unveiled in September 2021, and it competes in the American market against bestsellers such as the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Ram 1500. Sales of the Tundra in the US fell by 7.5% last year to 147,610 units, and in the first half of 2026, the figure dropped by 0.8% to 74,368 units.

Now, the Japanese brand's US office has announced the updates for the 2027 model year Toyota Tundra. All trims feature a slightly revised front end: the truck gets a redesigned massive radiator grille, a lower bumper section with integrated rectangular fog lights, and repositioned turn signals.

Changes have also been made to the interior of the refreshed Toyota Tundra. The standard equipment list now includes a 14-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system with enhanced voice control capabilities, as well as a built-in dashcam that records 20-second clips using the pickup's external cameras. The standard specification also includes the Safety Sense 4.0 suite of safety systems.

One of the key updates for the 2027 model year Tundra is the introduction of a new off-road version, with the addition of 'Trailhunter' to its name. It is worth noting that similar trims currently exist for models such as the 4Runner and Tacoma. The large Toyota Tundra Trailhunter pickup is based on the SR5 trim, but it has undergone substantial upgrades.

This truck not only gets distinctive badges and emblems for the new version, but also additional underbody protection, a upgraded OME (Old Man Emu) suspension, different front shock absorbers, and unique bronze alloy wheels fitted with Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R18 tyres. Additionally, the Trailhunter variant comes with Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control systems, as well as a rear differential lock.

The 'heart' of the 2027 model year Toyota Tundra remains unchanged. The pickup is offered either with a 3.4-litre V6 bi-turbo engine producing a maximum of 394 bhp, paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, or with an i-Force Max hybrid setup based on the same engine, with a combined system output of 443 bhp. It is expected that the Trailhunter version will have the 'pure' V6 under the bonnet.

Pricing for the refreshed truck will be announced later by Toyota's US office. The current starting price for the pickup in the US is at least $57,860 (excluding delivery fees), which is equivalent to approximately 4.5 million roubles at the current exchange rate. It is expected that the Tundra Trailhunter will be cheaper compared to the current top-spec TRD Pro variant, which can be purchased for $72,565 (around 5.7 million roubles).
