According to foreign media reports, scientists have developed a practical method for creating an "ultra-black" coating to meet the demand for stylish luxury vehicles in the Chinese market. This coating, introduced in a paper published in the journal Matter & Light, is made from a composite material composed of carbon black pigment and carbon nanotubes. The resulting color is a deep, pure black that meets automotive industry standards, helping automakers create high-end models with an unprecedented depth and uniqueness in exterior hues.

"In China, car color has become a key selling point," said Zhiwei Liu, a research chemist in the Color Technology Group Core R&D Shanghai at Nipsea Group and author of this paper. "Deep black paint has long been the preferred and iconic color for luxury vehicles due to its elegant appearance, strong visual impact, and the sense of luxury it conveys. Therefore, automotive coating companies are actively pursuing innovations in color technology, striving to develop ultra-black coating solutions that can achieve extreme blackness while being suitable for mass production."
