At the end of last month, the fifth generation of the popular X5 crossover held its premiere, and now the company is preparing its most powerful version with the M badge. What will it look like?

The history of the X5 model began in 1999, when the first generation of the mid-size crossover with the factory code E53 made its debut. Two years later, the range was expanded with the top-of-the-line X5 4.6is, while a full M version only appeared in the second generation (E70). The current X5 M, based on the fourth-generation model, was unveiled in 2019, and in early 2023 the SUV received a facelift.

Recently, spy photographs of the future X5 M were published online, revealing some quite significant differences from the standard fifth-generation X5 presented last week. The prototypes have completely different "kidneys" for the radiator grille: they are almost the same shape as those on the current X5 M/X6 M. At the same time, the headlights also have a slightly different shape from the standard X5 and look a bit narrower, although the signature LED light graphics in the form of an X should remain. The front bumper is still hidden under a thick layer of camouflage, so we have rendered it in the style of the brand's latest concept — the precursor to the future iM3 saloon. The rear section is also disguised, but here we can expect the appearance of a bespoke bumper with four exhaust pipes on the petrol version (there will also be a top-of-the-range electric variant).

The new BMW X5 debuted with five powertrain options straight away, and among the power units, as has recently been confirmed, the 8-cylinder petrol bi-turbo engine will remain. Next year, it will appear on the X5 M60 variant without any hybrid additions, and its output is expected to exceed 600 bhp. Thus, the X5 M version should deliver even higher performance. For comparison, the current M crossover boasts 625 bhp and 750 Nm of torque.

The premiere of the new BMW X5 M is expected closer to 2027. Meanwhile, sales of the new BMW i3 saloon began last month.
