BYD launches Sealion 6 DM-i and opens pre-orders... 37.5 million won

BYD Korea unveiled its first hybrid model, the BYD SEALION 6 DM-i, at the 2026 Busan Mobility Show Media Day held at BEXCO in Busan on the 26th, and has commenced official pre-orders.

Since introducing its mass-produced PHEV model in 2008, BYD has validated the sophistication of its hybrid technology over the past 18 years through sales of over 8 million units and a cumulative driving distance exceeding 30 billion kilometres. The newly revealed BYD SEALION 6 DM-i is a core model in BYD's global SUV lineup, with over 1.1 million units sold worldwide.

Key Specifications of DM-i, Embracing an Electric Vehicle-Based Hybrid Philosophy

DM-i (Dual Mode-intelligent) is based on a differentiated philosophy: an 'Electric-First Hybrid'. While conventional hybrid vehicles focus on assisting the efficiency of the internal combustion engine, the BYD SEALION 6 DM-i delivers the performance and refinement of an electric vehicle, with the internal combustion engine serving as a supplementary means to enhance efficiency. It offers the freedom of movement, allowing for daily commutes like an electric vehicle and long weekend journeys without the worry of charging.

The core components are the self-developed Electric Hybrid System (EHS) designed specifically for hybrids, the Xiaoyun high-efficiency engine, and the Blade Battery. The Electric Hybrid System (EHS), which acts as the brain of the DM-i, uses an electronically controlled e-CVT structure to deliver power smoothly without shift shocks and minimise driveline losses. Depending on driving conditions, it can operate in pure electric, series hybrid, parallel hybrid, series-parallel hybrid, and engine-only drive modes, seamlessly switching between them.

The Xiaoyun 1.5-litre petrol turbo engine fitted in the BYD SEALION 6 DM-i features control software developed specifically for domestic certification standards and driving conditions. Based on this, it delivers a maximum output of 96kW (130PS) and peak torque of 220Nm. The motor, which employs hairpin winding technology and an oil cooling system, achieves efficiency of over 97% along with high power density comparable to that of a pure electric vehicle. This enables a maximum motor output of 150kW (204PS) and peak torque of 300Nm.

BYD's core technology, the lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based Blade Battery, is also applied. Equipped with an 18.3kWh battery, it can travel up to 70km (combined cycle, single charge range) in EV mode alone. It not only features V2L functionality, typically known as a feature of electric vehicles, but also allows for power usage of up to 3.3kW, ensuring convenience on par with an EV. Furthermore, DC fast charging at up to 18kW is possible, allowing a charge from 30% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.

Ocean Aesthetics and Space Designed for the Family

The exterior of the BYD SEALION 6 DM-i, created by the design team led by Wolfgang Egger, BYD's Global Design Director, was completed by reinterpreting 'Ocean Aesthetics' to suit the proportions and volume of an SUV. By harmoniously blending flowing lines with solid surface treatments, it emphasises the futuristic image characteristic of an electrified SUV while achieving a stable presence befitting a mid-size SUV.

The interior, based on a space design that maximises the advantages of the electrified platform, delivers the practicality and premium feel required of a family SUV. Both the driver's and front passenger's seats feature power adjustment, ventilation, and heating functions, while the rear seats also offer stitching finishes, heating, and seatback reclining. The panoramic glass roof, with an area of 1.085m², provides occupants with an open, airy feel and a pleasant driving experience. Additionally, a powered sunshade is fitted, allowing occupants to control the amount of sunlight as desired. The boot capacity is 425 litres, which can be expanded to 1,440 litres when the 60:40 split rear seats are folded.

Convenience and Safety Features for Everyone

Convenience features tailored to domestic consumer preferences are also standard. Vehicle information can be viewed intuitively via a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch intelligent cockpit system. Over-the-air (OTA) software updates are possible via 4G connectivity and the cloud, and connectivity is enhanced with compatibility for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A surround-view monitor function using a 360-degree camera is also included as standard.

Safety features and driver assistance functions are applied as standard across all trims of the BYD SEALION 6 DM-i. Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), which utilise advanced radar sensors and cameras, enhance the long-distance driving experience. Additionally, safety features such as Blind Spot Assistance (BSA) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) are comprehensively equipped. Furthermore, a total of seven airbags, from the driver's seat to the rear seats, protect occupants in the event of a collision. Based on this, the BYD SEALION 6 DM-i achieved top ratings in the EURO NCAP safety tests, scoring 90% for adult occupant protection and 86% for child occupant protection.

The recommended retail price for the BYD SEALION 6 DM-i FWD is 37.5 million won. Through the SEALION 6 DM-i, BYD aims to allow domestic consumers to experience superior electrification technology and realise the brand's goal of 'popularising electrification technology'.
