GM Hanmaum Foundation operates 'Dagachi Playground' to help children from migrant backgrounds adapt to language and culture

GM Hanmaum Foundation Korea (hereinafter referred to as GM Hanmaum Foundation) held a ‘Multi-Value Playground’ experience programme and a donation ceremony on the 25th of last month at the Eoulrim Eukkeullim Education Centre in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, as part of an integrated support programme designed to help children from migrant backgrounds adapt to the language and culture.

This programme was created to support children in the Incheon area who, amid the growing number of children from migrant backgrounds, face difficulties in school life and forming peer relationships due to language and cultural differences. It is significant as an integrated programme that goes beyond simple language education, using play and hands-on experiences to help develop language skills, cultural understanding, emotional stability, and social relationships.

Together with the Incheon Regional Headquarters of ChildFund Korea, GM Hanmaum Foundation plans to run a total of 22 sessions for children from migrant backgrounds, including play activities, cooking activities, language activities, and community activities. These will include themed play and craft experiences focused on learning about culture, history, and food, cooking activities to make Korean dishes, play-based language education, and community exploration and volunteer work, all aimed at supporting children’s daily adaptation and social relationship building.

The experience programme held on the 25th of last month was attended by Hector Villarreal, President of GM Hanmaum Foundation and Head of GM Korea’s operations, GM employees, Kim Jin, Head of the Incheon Regional Headquarters of ChildFund Korea, and representatives from local partner organisations. During the event, the programme was introduced, and a donation of 20 million won was presented to the Incheon Regional Headquarters of ChildFund Korea. This was followed by a cooking class in which 20 primary school-aged children from migrant backgrounds made cupcakes and sandwiches.

Meanwhile, since its establishment in 2005, GM Hanmaum Foundation has been carrying out social contribution activities alongside local communities in the fields of education, environment, health, and safety. In particular, it has developed programmes to support the settlement of families of Afghan special contributors and projects supporting women and multicultural organisations, aimed at community integration and self-reliance. Through this programme, the foundation plans to expand its support for children from migrant backgrounds.
