For millions of Soviet motorists, the VAZ-2101 became a sort of ticket into the world of modern foreign cars of that era, for despite the 800 differences from the Italian original, in terms of dynamics and comfort the 'Kopeyka' stood out favourably against the domestic Moskvich models.

In Tolyatti, they did not limit themselves to producing new models like the VAZ-2103: to keep the 'nought-one' relevant, they decided to modernise it, releasing an updated version under the index 21011.
