Chinese EVs instead of 'Mercedes E-Class taxis'... BYD targets the German taxi market

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, a large executive saloon, was once the symbol of the German taxi. The long line of ivory-coloured taxis at the arrival terminal of Frankfurt International Airport used to leave a lasting impression on travellers visiting Germany for the first time. Above all, this was because Mercedes-Benz, a premium brand, was being used as a taxi. However, following Mercedes-Benz's decision not to offer a taxi version of the current W214 E-Class, the German taxi industry has been left with no choice but to seek new alternatives. For reference, Mercedes-Benz has also discontinued the taxi versions of the B-Class and C-Class.

Furthermore, legal regulations imposed by German local authorities also had to be taken into account. Hamburg, one of Germany's major cities, has stipulated that, as of 1 January 2025, all newly registered hire cars and taxis must be zero-emission vehicles. Amidst this regulatory pressure and the industry's need to find new vehicle supply sources, it was the Chinese car manufacturer BYD that stepped in to lend a hand.

BYD is pursuing an aggressive strategy to target the taxi and hire car market that Mercedes-Benz has vacated. First, it has secured local taxi conversion specialists as partners. These companies convert BYD vehicles into taxis and hire cars. The vehicles are transformed into road-ready models compliant with local regulations, including exterior wrapping, installation of taxi meters, fitting of roof advertising signs, and emergency alarm systems. The interior trim is also changed to focus on hard-wearing plastics that resist staining. Around 100 of the BYD taxis supplied in this way are held by BYD as permanent stock. This is to minimise downtime caused by accidents and repairs.

BYD is currently supplying a range of models to taxi and hire car operators, depending on the business region and purpose. These include the 'Seal 6 DM-i Touring', a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, and the pure electric vehicles 'Sealion 7' and 'Atto 3'.

In the future, Mercedes-Benz E-Class taxis are expected to become increasingly rare in Germany. Their place will be filled by hybrid and electric vehicles from mainstream brands. Germany is not the first country where BYD has entered the taxi market. BYD is expanding its influence across various countries and regions, including Mexico, Colombia, Chile, the Philippines, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and India. Domestically, numerous BYD electric buses are also in operation.
