New Audi RS Q5 2027

Audi is preparing the first ever top-of-the-range RS version of its Q5 SUV, as evidenced by spy photographs of prototypes published in recent days. What will it be like?

The Q5 model was first introduced in 2008, sharing its platform with the A4 and A5 saloons. In 2013, the range was expanded with the sporty SQ5 variant, but the most powerful version with the RS badge, traditional for such models, was not offered in either the first or second generation, the latter of which premiered in 2016. Judging by the latest spy photographs, this situation will be rectified in the third generation, which made its debut in autumn 2024.

The prototypes captured by spy photographers already show noticeable differences from the standard Q5 versions, the main one being the enormous radiator grille that extends right down to the bottom of the front bumper. Also clearly visible are large vertical air intakes at the edges, which may be visually linked to the grille by a black contrasting insert, as done on the latest generation RS5 family. The SUV will feature widened wheel arch trims, and there is also a possibility of revised front wings with additional air vent slits. At the rear, the prototypes already display a new bumper with the brand's signature oval exhaust outlets of impressive size, although these are positioned in a more conventional location compared to the narrowly spaced pipes on the new RS5 and future RS6 models.

The standard Q5 shares the PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) platform with the A5 saloon family, and it can be expected that the top-of-the-range RS Q5 will also receive the same hybrid powertrain as the latest generation RS5 models. This includes a 510-horsepower bi-turbo V6 engine with a 2.9-litre displacement (600 Nm) paired with a 177-horsepower electric motor (460 Nm) integrated into an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The combined output of the PHEV system is 639 bhp and 825 Nm. For comparison, the most powerful current SQ5 version, equipped with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder TFSI engine, produces 367 bhp (550 Nm).

The timing of the new model's premiere is not yet known, but given the high degree of visual readiness of the prototypes, it could take place within a few months. The RS Q5 will also serve as the basis for the future petrol-powered Porsche Macan (which will likely receive a different name), expected in 2028.
