Jeep is trying to convince everyone that the electric Compass 4xe is a real off-roader

The top-spec 4xe version of the third-generation Jeep Compass crossover has arrived on the European market. In Germany, such a car costs from €54,900.
The third-generation Jeep Compass made its premiere in May 2025, based on the modular STLA Medium platform, with production set up at the Stellantis plant in the Italian commune of Melfi. The all-wheel-drive Jeep Compass 4xe was first revealed in July 2025, but sales in Europe only began on 23 June 2026. All other versions of the third-generation Jeep Compass are front-wheel-drive, offering two hybrid and two electric powertrains.

The Jeep Compass 4xe is equipped with a dual-motor electric powertrain: the front motor delivers 157 kW and 345 Nm, the rear motor 132 kW and 232 Nm, with a maximum combined output of 276 kW (375 hp) and 577 Nm. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.9 seconds, and the top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h. The 400-volt battery has a capacity of 103 kWh, of which 96.1 kWh is usable, offering a maximum range of 606 km on a single charge under the WLTP cycle. The maximum charging power is 160 kW (quite modest by modern standards).

Compared with other versions of the Compass, the 4xe features a ground clearance increased by 10 mm to 210 mm and a unique bumper design with tow hooks. The overall length of the Jeep Compass 4xe is 4587 mm, width 1936 mm, height 1667 mm, with a wheelbase of 2795 mm. Standard wheels are 19 inches. The approach angle is 28 degrees, departure angle 31 degrees, ramp angle 17 degrees, and wading depth 480 mm. Kerb weight is 2252 kg excluding the driver.

In general, the geometric off-road capability of the Compass 4xe is typically crossover-like, but Jeep's press office is trying to convince potential buyers that the new model is a proper off-roader, which is why an impressive photo shoot from the dusty landscapes of the island of Sardinia and a promotional video with the ambitious slogan "It'll go anywhere — full stop" were published today.

In the arsenal of the Jeep Compass 4xe, there is a reduction gearbox attached to the rear electric motor with a gear ratio of 14:1 (torque at the rear wheels can reach 3100 Nm) and five driving modes: Auto, Sport, Sand & Mud, Snow, and 4WD Lock. The 4WD Lock mode activates full power and continuous operation of both electric motors. The manufacturer also promises that the Jeep Compass 4xe can climb a 20 per cent incline even with zero traction from the front wheels.

Is all of the above enough to consider the Jeep Compass 4xe an off-roader? When it comes to electric vehicles, there is still no clear criterion distinguishing an off-roader from a crossover (in the world of combustion-engined cars, one such criterion is the presence of a low-range gear in the transfer case), so Jeep has every right to call its new model an off-roader. Whether this will help sales remains to be seen.
