Ferrari Luce vs. Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door: Which Super EV Gets the Future Right?

new-carsBy AutoHive Staff
The Ferrari Luce and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe are epochal first production EVs from their brands. The author attended previews and drove prototypes of both. The Luce has a four-motor in-house powertrain producing 1,035 hp and 730 lb-ft of torque, with a 122-kWh battery offering a claimed WLTP range of 330 miles. The AMG GT 4-Door, powered by three axial-flow motors from Yasa, delivers 1,153 hp and 1,475 lb-ft, with a 106-kWh battery claiming 370-430 miles WLTP range and peak charge rates over 600 kW. The GT63 is quicker off the line (0-60 mph in about 2.0 seconds) but the Luce has a higher top speed (193 mph vs 186 mph). The Ferrari is lighter (5,423 lbs vs 4,982 lbs) with better weight distribution (47% front vs 49%) and advanced Slide Slip Control X for precise dynamics. The AMG offers extensive adjustability via its Race Engineer Control Unit, including nine-stage traction control. The author predicts the Ferrari will feel more intuitive, while the AMG will appeal to sim-racers. Both cars feature semi-active suspension and four-wheel steering. The Luce’s design is a radical cab-forward four-door with limo-like space, while the AMG is a low, aggressive techno-muscle car with digitised V-8 sound and fake gearshifts. Despite online criticism, neither is a misstep; they represent a second generation of electric performance vehicles, more adventurous and involving than first-gen rivals like the Tesla Model S Plaid.
